Paint.NET is alright, but I'd suggest GIMP over that...GIMP is cooler, and like an easier Photoshop. Even though I have no idea on how to use it...I'm too used to Photoshop to even learn GIMP or Paint.NET.@SoarKrieg wrote:@Granadico wrote:

Photoshop is great. Pretty easy to learn how to use. I usually just try to make something then google how to do something if I'm stuck. The controls are also easier to use.
GraphicsGale is a good one for customing/editting, well, not really, but I like to use it for customing/editting. But it acts like a REALLY watered down Photoshop. Very simple to use, and it's a good program. I'd definitely suggest it.
But no need too get into a 'my program is better than your program' arguement. I don't mean to stir any trouble just giving my opinions on these programs. ^.^

Since I'm clearly the only person with any experience, let me explain better.
I've completely removed Photoshop from my pipeline, I don't use it anymore at all. Gimp and Paint.net do every essential and non-essential thing you would ever need for image editing. Photoshop only has a tiny bit of extra conveniences, but Gimp is every bit as good and has its own conveniences over Photoshop, ones which I consider more practical.
Paint.net is a simpler image editor, but it does everything you need it to for basic image editing. It fully supports transparency, so to you Mr dabestbrawler, you probably copy-pasted directly from Paint.net to Flash, something people seem to be doing a lot, even with other image editors. You'd have to be completely shitfaced anal licking retarded to do that. When image data is active in a program, its not designed to be compatible with other programs, ESPECIALLY Flash. You HAVE to save your images first, png is best like I said.
Photoshop is over 600 dollars, takes forever to load, and consumes tons of memory. Paint.net loads in seconds and works quickly. Gimp loads faster than Photoshop and consumes less memory. Did I mention both Paint.net and Gimp are 100% free of charge?
As for GraphicsGale, its very good for sprite editing/making. It supports animation and transparency, and its tools and interface are extremely efficient. You can export your animations to sprite sheets. The free version doesn't support gif (only real difference), which you don't need anyway if you read my tutorial.

Lange is right since the only program that works with the copy n' paste thing directly to Flash is Fireworks. But it doesn't have any good features in it. That's why GIMP and GraphicsGale are my choices, while I still use a little bit of Photoshop for making the little things that GIMP can't. Also, I just don't use Paint.net since I don't wanna have more than one million of programs just for image editing.

Sometimes that's the best way, and the fun way. I rely on any tools I can think of that will get the job done. Sometimes the method has to be unorthodox rather than trying to find a button in photoshop or something. For any kind of graphics I commonly use a combination of Gimp, Paint.net, Flash, and Blender (best combo in my book). But sometimes there's a weird piece of software out there that does something specific you might want.

I agree with you Lange. Even though I just don't use Paint.net because that I already have GIMP and Photoshop with me. These two, combined with Flash are my best choices for animating.

I got Photoshop CS4 for free, lol. I wish someone told me all that before I bothered, though. But does anyone have any advice about that program Leo mentioned that I always hear about; Fireworks?

Uh... It's sorta like GIMP, but it's compatible with Flash so, you can directly copy 'n paste from it to Flash. That's the only useful thing about it for me.

Oh, I see. Is that how everyone gets their sprites from there into Flash with transparent backgrounds?

Yup. But, only if you want to copy 'n paste directly from Fireworks to Flash. Any other program uses the method described by Mr. Lange.
