How to recolor sprites sheets with Gimp

Here is a video version of the tutorial for those that dont like reading but I still recomend that you read the tutorial.



Step 1
Open the sprite sheet you want to recolor in Gimp

I will use Yoshi for this tutorial

Click on the "color picker tool"

Then open up another image that has the color that you want and click on the color

Or you can click on the "color box" and you will get a dialog box where you can change the color without opening another image

Once you pick the color that you want the "color box's" color will change to the one you selected

Click on the "select by color tool" button

Step 6
Then you click on the color that you want to replace, and you will get a dotted outline around the color on the entire sprite sheet

Right click on the color that you want to replace then go to Edit--->Fill with FG Color

Now the color for the entire sprite sheet should have been replaced with the one that was in the "color box"

The only reason this tutorial is has a lot of steps is because I wanted it to be very well explained once you know how to do this it should only take a few clicks to recolor a sprite sheet.

hmmm this was cool. I always used MS paint but now i wanna try this method. Also it was a pretty well explained Tutorial with good examples. Though others may not agree with me I would give you a 9/10.

I think the PS way is abit faster IMO but thanks for the tutorial =D(even thought idont use gimp but this motivativaded me to try it)

Yea but its made via Gimp, so its better than your PS way.

Helps change sprites by a tiny bit but is useful/easier.

This is nice because Gimp is already free.

So if you don't have Fireworks, Photoshop, etc, Gimp is a good alternate. However, GraphicsGale is also pretty nice.

i ttly do not know... its quicker dan ms paint, though... i dont know if my pre-edited(ish) sprites will work...

So will these Gimp files (xcf's) go onto Flash CS3 (the adobe I use)? If not do I need to change them into another file? Plz respond. Thanks.

No. You have to make them PNG.

EDIT: There are a couple of other formats you could make them but PNG is arguably the best format for importing into Flash considering it handles transparency and compresses the file with very minimal loss in quality.
