At first, I wasn't too thrilled that Alvin decided that he wanted to reboot the SMBZ series. I wanted him to pick up where he left off. But after seeing this, I take that back. The episode 1 reboot was incredible and really solid too! I enjoyed every second of it and he's improved a lot!

I would of loved to see the Double Dash race in the reboot though, but the Smash tournament works too.

So his patreon got taken down by Nintendo.

Though this makes me wonder... if several artists use patreons to fund fan works such as art ,music and videos  why don't those get taken down? O_o

Was it because he was earning a lot?

Though he started a new one that didn't specify whether the money was being used for the series though.

Probably cuz sprite animations use actual sprites from the game

Nintendo shouldn't even be able to take the patreon down. Patreon is a donation website, money is given to the person because of whatever reason. Technically, he's not making his money directly from the animations or sprites. Plus he does other art too, so that hsould be taken into consideration.

I actually really enjoyed the reboot. Way better than all the previous episodes. I think that this is the a pretty good sprite animation that stays pretty close to the roots of where sprite animation started.

I recall the days when you had to animate with After Effects and Blender for your work to be modern. It was great to see this animation, implementing some different perspectives and unique choreography, yet staying true to what sprite animating is all about.

It had this different flavor of being a standard sprite animation but some spices to it that gave it more than just a normal sprite animation. It's like when you watch old time classics like D-SuN's Mario vs. Luigi or Proxicide's MK vs. SF, both are pretty standard animations, but have this bit of flavor that help separate it from the rest. It really helped me realize that you don't have to use After Effects or Blender to stay relevant, sure that could make it easier, but there is also this route. I have seen tons of animations, even from you guys that are decently animated, but for lack of a better term, its plain. Sure, the animation is smooth and it's clean, but it just doesn't have those spices. I would link some animations that I have seen most recently, but I don't want to call any out on that. Another person that animates kind of, "to the roots" is DS. His work is quite innovative, yet stays true to the roots of sprite animating. To me, sprite animating started from our love of video games, then realizing we could actually take those characters and manipulate them and create our own scenarios seemed so fun. As sprite animating developed, ideas from anime came in (see YuuMonMu) and that was also great, as it stayed true to the video game dimensions but throwing in some anime flairs. YuuMonMu also implemented some very interesting choreography which made up for his ability in overall camera work and animation. I mean the list can go on about old time animators that have great work that have that old flair to it. By the way, this goes without saying Eric and Lange's work aren't good. Of course, I love that work, but it's kind of taken sprite animation and manipulated it in a way that others haven't even imagined. This is great, but with innovation comes imitation, and there were people who tried to implement that in their work. I think that all of these different styles of animation deserve praise, and that they are all quite great.

I really think that Alvin outdid himself here. While I haven't been watching sprite animations lately, and my judgement scale might be off, I have come to realize that in the past I judged at a way too high level. I think that this animation is entertaining, fun, innovative, one to go in the books. I really hope that Alvin can continue with this, as before I did not consider his legacy and SMBZ's in the sprite animating history. Sure it helped stir some more animators in the pot, but it was definitely no Mario vs. Luigi or MK vs. SF. I think it might be me being an old timer, but those animations are definitely some that I think define sprite animating at its core.

In the end, it kind of inspired me to start up again~

Mah nigga Patt. Fucking awesome post. Seriously provocative stuff you wrote there. You actually enlightened me on a problem I was facing watching these "modern" animations as well.

Basically, a lot of these animations look great an all but I have to wonder if the animator really had any "fun" while animating. And maybe I'm the only one who can really understand what I am trying to say here, but in a lot of old, good (and maybe not so good) animations it seems to me that the animators truly had fun with their animations. Like, I would finish an animation and I would literally think "wow, they had a lot of fun with this animation" and to me that was such a massive form of motivation and enjoyment. That's why I am such an avid believer in primarily animating for yourself and your enjoyment.

This right here is a very powerful sentence and one that I deeply resonate with. Even thinking back to when I first discovered sprite animation with CrazyEight's Dark Sonic vs Shadow. I didn't get excited and learn sprite animation to make super good looking animations with top-notch animation techniques and the highest quality sounds and effects (tho I definitely believe it's necessary to have good quality material). I got excited to learn sprite animation because I could take these characters, characters I looked up to in video games, and actually create my own stories and scenarios with them. That's all I needed to know to get excited about sprite animation and unfortunately that's something that I've forgotten so thank you patt for reminding me about that.

Also, this is pretty exciting to read! Can't wait to see you do some stuff!
