One Minute Melee - Lucario vs Renamon
4/10/2015, 10:50 pm
Hey guys, its been a while xD
Been busy with life as usual but I didn't quit I promise!
Anyway, As you read my Episode of One Minute Melee airs today, and is featured on ScrewAttack's page
So, to see it you'll have to go there :
And if ya want to drop me a like and some love on my vid, here's the preview on my page:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-yCGiou8Ng
All in all I had a lot of fun animating this, and I feel that One Minute couldn't possibly encompass all of
their abilities and forms and such. Nonetheless I hope you guys enjoy the fight

I keep watching this and I think my favorite part is the slowdown right before they actually start fighting. Like, the flow from Cynthia's room theme into Cynthia's champion theme is just so perfect right there. Also these two would make a great team.

60 FPS is a complete and utter waste of time. all you're doing is making extra frames that don't need to be there.

Well it's not totally useless. The extra frames do allow you to make the animation smoother if you take advantage of them. Now, I don't necessarily think it's worth the effort, but it's definitely not useless.

SXR PLEASE HAVE SEVERAL SEATS.
"You should paint instead of sculpt."
"You should draw instead of paint."
That's what i'm hearing from you.
The objective is to move forward, not remain stagnant in your comfy zone.
Even if 60 fps is just adding more frames, you can't say there's nothing that can be gleaned from animating in 60 fps. They might come up with a technique that makes work flow more efficient, which could be applied to an even smaller fps. They can learn to limit graphic intensity and manage it efficiently. How movements of sprites might work in 30 fps, but aren't exactly fitting for the speed of 60 fps (that's speaking from experience, I've worked with 60 fps). A multitude of things are possible, but you won't experience the joy of finding the possibilities because you're too content swimming in a pool of comfort and mediocrity.

not sure why y'all turning this thread into dumb fps argument but i guess that's ok since it's the spritas after all. anyway:
no, 60 fps doesn't teach you anything. literally all it does is add more time resolution.
for instance, if you did super fast movement in 30 fps, now it would be 2x faster than it was. to get it to the same speed as it was, you'd have to make it 2x slower, either by just letting the keyframes appear more than 1 frame on the screen, or add new keyframes between the old ones.
that's all it does. you're just fitting more "snapshots" into a second.
it allows for more detail, yeah, that's a given, but if you're not doing super crazy fast motion, then 60 fps is pretty much useless. it's just more padding that can easily lead to mushy animation.
if there's anything to be learned from using 60 fps (or any frame rates higher than the usual 12/24/25/30 (yes, 12)), is that spacing becomes crucial to make it work properly. when you have a resolution that's too fine, any small incongruities are gonna just look like meaningless noise. the animation will feel nauseating with all the visible noise. it's hard to make something really pack a punch and have a definite direction like you can with lower frame rates. not impossible, but a hard balance to hit.

ɹǝɐןןıʌ wrote:"You should paint instead of sculpt."

First off, these arguments are totally stupid because each of them are different things. a better argument would have been "You should take pictures instead of drawing landscapes." and once again, that is also a stupid argument.
Sculpting and painting are two different art mediums. One creates a 3D piece of art and the other is 2D with the illusion of 3D. Next off, 60 FPS is a complete and utter waste of time. As rapid said all it fucking does is make the animation a little smoother. But smoother does not always mean better. There's a reason that ABSOLUTELY NO ONE, outside of the numbskulls who use 60 FPS seriously (minus those testing it out like KA and other experienced animators).
Reason 1) in the industry, animation costs money. lots of money. Why waste time making frames more smooth then they need to be?
Reason 2) 24 - 30 FPS feels natural while 60 FPS feels incredibly UNNATURAL. I am totally aware of the fact that I'm watching something in 60 FPS while when I'm watching 24 -30 I completely forget the fact. It's a deterrent. I guess you could argue that the reason this happens is because it's what people are used too.
Reason 3) It's a lot of wasted time with little pay off. There's no "technique" to make 60 FPS anymore then what it is. Just like there's no "technique" for 24 or 30FPS. The only "technique" you can do is to add more frames then there needs to be which, again is just a big time waster.
http://puu.sh/bXHMR.webm (Also if you watch this anime english dub all the way)
I mean yeah, this looks really neat and smooth but it's so freaking unnatural that it turns me off just watching it. and this is btw, one of my favorite scenes from that film. The way her hair moves and the way their bodies move is so unnatural that it just kills the entire experience for me.
or in other words, kills my immersion into the film.
end rant.
EDIT: also what leo said. spacing and all that jazz.

i still think it's honestly up to the individual, like if u wanna do that stuff, knock yourself out. can't stop anyone lol. unless there's money involved, because then your director won't like when you're 10 weeks into a scene and you're *still* not done with it, just because 60 fps lolrrlz
i don't think it's too unnatural when it's done well, it's a bit too much detail though, a bit like those super high resolution photos where you can see someone's skin in super ultra ebin hd. kinda nasty in a way. idk how to explain it exactly, it just doesn't feel that nice.
and i know someone will mention games at some point, but remember, time resolution. in games it's cool because there's better input capture resolution. so instead of having ur input being captured every 1/30th of a second, it's being captured every 1/60th, which means more detail which means responsive video gams!!!!!!!!!!!!!
let's end this here please. it's dumb
