A question for The Spritas Empty A question for The Spritas

on 4/22/2013, 3:25 pm
I was talking to someone and this question came up.

Think of this question as a question from a sprite animator in general:

What does THE SPRITAS community offer to a sprite animator like me, or yourselves. Why would I want to stay and become one of you?

Serious answers please.

Sprite animation is sort of a dying community, if you really enjoy it and want support + feedback, this is the site for you.

A chance to be a better spriter, not just in animation, but in overall creation as well. A chance to show everyone, what we can do. Its true that you could get better on your own, but as a group we're stronger. As a group we can achieve more, that is, if your willing to give us a chance.

@BDB wrote:Sprite animation is sort of a dying community.

I wouldn't say its dying, more like its scattered, distant, ununited. sure the well known guys have disapeared 1 by 1 but they weren't the majority of the community.

most remaining animators are either too busy with real life, lack experience, or just keep to theirselves.

there are actually plenty of spriters on deviant, probobaly more than us.

If we can find a way to get them to converge onto 1 centralized location we can start something big.

I mean obviously thats what this site was made for but we still need a reason for them to come and stay.

The Spritas is a safe heaven for sprite animators not to be made fun of or shunned. It's a place where we as a community can show our animations to get a honest critic. Instead of the bullshit reviews newgrounds provides.

some people on newgrounds make good points, but their reviews are pretty biased.

if you have more than 3 brain cells and you actually use them, you can learn it yourself, it's not that hard. i wouldn't say this place has taught me about animation (i learned more doing my own research and what not), but you can get good feedback. that's one of the strongest points of this place, since usually all you get is either "awesome" or "you fucking suck, give up"

the spritas offers next to nothing for animators.

it only gives them a place to hang out, post their stuff, get feedback, speak their mind, and improve.

if you count that as nothing.

um
the resource section doesn't have a lot of stuff actually. at least it's not decompiled crap.

the tutorials are probably better (who knows, I've never been active on other sprite animation communities), but eh

A question for The Spritas Empty Re: A question for The Spritas

I kinda agree with 5h0ck, but I don't think we are quite what we set out to be. We WANT to be that place where everyone goes to learn how to animate sprites, animation techniques and skills, etc and for the most part we usually come through. BUT sprite animation has definitely seen better days and I think we are letting that get a hold of us. Like depression, it grasps us and constantly tells us how much we suck and how we shouldn't even exist, but with some hard work, dedication, pride, and charisma we can overcome the odds and pull through.

The people we once looked up to have mostly gone and left, so it is up to us to reignite the fiery passion we once claimed. We ourselves need to branch out more to other places. We should create a YouTube channel for ourselves and upload our animations there; the same for deviantart and Newgrounds, especially Newgrounds. 5 years ago Newgrounds was where the quality sprite animations were and now, for Newgrounds, sprite animation ain't nothing but a joke. We can show them that we are still alive. We can show them that we still exist. We can show them that we are still proud because together we can achieve whatever we set our mind to.

WE ARE THE SPRITAS!

not just newgrounds btw.
most animation communities think that sprite animation is a joke.

and to be honest, if you guys want to change that, you'll have to get so much better. and that's just to make them say "oh ok now you're putting effort on these". it's really hard because most of them still see sprite animation as theft. you're taking someone else's content and moving it around in flash/paint/pivot/whatever.

You're all missing the point. You guys are giving idealizations of what the spritas should be.
Not what it is.

Face it, half of us have so much talent and yet don't animate.
Others do but don't post. It's rare to see anything good here as far as animation goes. If anything inspires someone is feedback. Most of the times there are irrelevant discussions that go on in that topic that don't even provide the feedback the animator was intending to get.

On top of that, SPRITE animations require SPRITING. That sprite section is like a dead lady's cooch. Filled with spiderwebs. It's bad. Then to be discouraged with "limitations" and "sprites have no flexiablity" is pure bullshit. Try making a hand drawn animation without knowing how to draw. Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaame thing.

I was the one that asked SXR that question he's asking you guys, Thespritas has the potential to be pretty much one of the best forums around. Sprite animation is so general, so common there's really no excuse that it should be like this at all.
It's just there is basically no rules, no foundation, nothing to hook a noob in. Poor Joey is probably the only useful contributor to this forum. If it weren't for him there'd be nothing. Discussing this with Eric is like talking to a roach lol..Lange got his shit to do so what's left here? Think about it, soooo many sprite animators use Thespritas preloader, but don't even exist here. Why is that?
If you're a sprite animator, why would you be here instead of Deviantart. ?
What reason or motive would keep someone in this forum ?

I remember I would be here like I was addicted to crack. Now I forget this place even exists and remember if either Dave directs me, or out of the blue.

Which is sad.

Basically Jayden, your saying by our previous actions, we take the spriting out of thespritas, making it a misleading title, and an non promising hook in for newcomers.

Correct?

Nope. Not at all.
Main purpose of the forum is sprite animation, so the name speaks for itself.
But what I'm saying is that a lot of people keep whining about sprites being a disadvantage, and that other types of animation are better for stupid reasons.
Not being able to sprite is the disadvantage, not sprite animations in general.

I see where you're going Jay and I agree 100%.

So basically our problems are as follows:

  • None of us contribute.

  • Not only do we not use sprite editing for our animations, we don't even emphasize sprite editing.

  • There are practically no rules being enforced so we often don't offer any valuable criticism nor do we even stay on topic well.

  • We don't have anything to keep our newcomers here.

There are probably more problems but these are the biggest correct?

If so, I would like to add this:

  • We debate/argue way too much

i think jayden is talking about actually MAKING sprites, not just editing.

and again, i don't think the rules should be enforced that much. i mean, yeah, some people take it TOO far and keep going off-topic all the time, but if it's just a few posts and it's just for laughs, i wouldn't worry about it. however if those people only listen when you start being super strict, so be it.

Editing, making them whichever is fine.

People shun sprite animations with ignorance. One moment they're like SPRITES SUCK GO DIE.

They see something good like Lange or Alvin and they change their mind.

Spriting could be up there, but this isn't what this topic is about. We shouldn't even care about them or anyone else. Look at Maplemation, god I hate Maple sprites and if they were posted on NG they'd probably get shunned too, but in their site and on youtube they whoop ass as a forum. They've managed to build a community of one the shittiest spriting styles around and make it bad ass. Only growing as time passes.

So if a site as specific as Maplestory can do so much, how come we can't be that awesome as a forum.

Yeah going off topic is hilarious, but not when someone wants feedback. Usually those off topic conversations last like a page or 2 which shouldn't be. Rules should be enforced, because then what purpose should this site have mods at all? Not strict as in super up asshole type strict, but there needs to be something..

Most new members that come here barely pass 5 posts...

Exactly. I've seen countless intro topics with people who want to learn sprite animation, they make big intro's and it's obvious that they want to learn how

but... well then they look around and well...
