virus disguised as a file restor program Empty virus disguised as a file restor program

ok so before i tell you what happened heres a set of easy to follow instructions on how to get rid of this virus.

http://malwaretips.com/blogs/smart-hdd-removal-steps/

ok so i'm online trying to watch youtube when all of a sudden this program just pops up and says the following messages

"Hard drive boot sector reading error
During I/O system initialization, the boot device driver might have failed to initialize the boot device. File system initialization might have failed because it did not recognize the data on the boot device."

"System blocks were not found
This has most likely occurred because of hard disk failure.
This may also lead to a potential loss of data."

"Error 0×00000024 – NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
The Stop 0×24 message indicates that a problems occurred within Ntfs.sys, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. It is most often related to hard drive errors."

"Error 0×00000078 – INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
The Stop 0×78 message indicates that Windows has lost access to the system partition or boot volume during the startup process. During I/O system initialization, the boot device driver might have failed to initialize the boot device (typically a hard disk). Repartitioning the system partition or installing a new SATA/RAID adapter or disk controller might also induce this error."

so yea anyways I'm sitting here like "oh shit shit shit". and i see files on my desktop disappearing. but i tell myself to calm down because when your not calm you make more mistakes and could end up makeing things worse.

now the program says it can restore the hard disc boot drive and that i just have to buy and fully register the program.

so i'm about to click buy but then i started thinking "wait....what progam is this?" so i look at the name and i don't recongnize it at all, thats when i started getting slightly suspicous. so i take another look at my desktop and the shortcut for the file is on my desktop, and thats when i knew something was wrong about that file. you see I have a folder specifically for desktop shortcuts and made sure all my shortcuts were inside that folder. and i haven't installed anything in a month. thats when i realized it installed itself right before i got the error mesages.

now theres always the possibility I really did have it for a long time and just never noticed. so i went online and did some research just in case i turned out to be wrong. I googled the error messege "Hard drive boot sector reading error" and then i discovered that there are only 2 ways you can get that error. either your hard drive really is fucked or you have a virus.

so i keep researching and find out that the "program" was the virus.

i gotta say whoever made it is pretty smart.

you see the virus doesn't actually delete any of your files, it makes you think your computers fucked by triking you into thinking your files are corrupt. what it does is open a bunch of error messages and while its doing that it alters your computers settings and hids all of your file(wich you can do manually by right clicking going to properties and checking the hidden box" and then it says if you but it everything will be fixed

anyways it hids your files, your folders, administrative tools and most of your program files, makeing you think their gone as well as makes it harder for you to acess them normally, all while distracting you with fake error mesages and slowing the cpu's response time,

and if you do buy it, it uses the oportunity to get personal info and other identity theft related things.

Yeah, there are A TON of "programs" like this. I remember a few years back when I was looking for a program like CCleaner (which is amazing. If you don't have it right now slap yourself and get it; it's free) and I stumbled across something. I think it was like "Registry Cleaner 2007" or some shit like that. So I was like "oh cool" But when I got the page I decided I wasn't gonna download it cuz the site looked sketchy. However, my firefox crashed and when I reopened it had downloaded and installed without me realizing. So then all of a sudden I'm surfing the web and I see "Registry Cleaner 2007" attempting to clean files and I go into OH SHIT mode. Lmao.

Lol, I'm sure it didn't matter which browser I was using. I think all it did was initiate a false crash to make me think that something was wrong and then a false recover to basically lower my guard and implicitly download a virus.

I've had it before to. I ignored it while my virus protection quickly caught wind of it and got rid of the virus. it told me:

"Hard drive could not be located"

and shit like that. I honestly don't remember much of it, but I know it confused me at first. it was awhile ago though.
