"If we improve ourself, all our work goes with us when we die. However, the work we do to improve the world shall last forever."

- Paraphrased from something someone once said.

I actually like helping people to learn, and have often tried to teach fledgling rookies the ways of flash in one-to-one sessions. These often end in great frustration for me as they usually give up on Flash long before they get to a point where they can make their first movie as they quickly come to realize Flash is not the magic box they first thought it was and instead is a cruel-cruel mistress. It just seems some of my advice can actually make a difference in the future of sprite animation if I help here, people shouldn't have to constantly reinvent the wheel each generation just because the artistic elite of Newgrounds looks collectively down upon sprite animators and refuses to give them the time of day.

I'm not that great. You should see me when my nerves are shot and I'm fighting with the guy who helps make custom sprites for CTU. Now Kris Sumrall might well be a saint for putting up with all the times I make him redo something until I accept it, or sometimes just flat out change my mind.

Flash 6 lmfao that would be Flash MX. I can't say I blame you for using an older version, but hell I would really suggest you move up to Flash 8.

Speaking of which, show us some of your work Clovis.

To answer the questions here:

I first started going to College in the year 2000, but it was not until 2003 that I took a class related to flash. The professor for that class taught everyone the basic concepts of symbols (Lesson 1: For the love of God, only one symbol to a layer), tweens, and the timeline; but he really didn't know that much about flash and probably would have learned many things about Flash just by reading Lange's tutorials. His most common stock response to questions he had no clue about (most of them) was that it was either done with action script, of which he knew nothing about, or that clearly you needed to use Freehand to do that. While it is often true that you need at least a modicum of action script to do many things, he would often assign it to things that didn't need it at all; and as for Freehand, I seriously don't think anyone has ever truly used that for anything ever.

The following is the first thing I made in that class: http://clovis15.deviantart.com/gallery/2055459#/d6qkz0 (I was told to make an animated holiday gift card... in that regards he probably should have given me an F considering what it's about, but he didn't)

The Third and Final thing I made in that class: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/102669 (We were supposed to make a game of some sort. Despite the fact everyone else started over two weeks sooner than me, in part because my partner kept dicking off on making the art assets that were his responsibility, the game I started 3 days before the due date - of which I worked on 24/7 - was the only actually functional flash that actually worked come turn in day)

After finishing the class, I didn't really do much of anything animation-wise with Flash. I did, however, start using it for making artwork (despite my professor's ardent assertion you would have to use Freehand for that). Although using flash for making images is definitely mechanically different from raster programs, I would say that in the long run I did just fine using it: http://clovis15.deviantart.com/art/Hammer-Mario-Let-s-a-Go-193387621 (this picture was finished earlier this month)

Eventually sometime around the end of 2004 a friend of mine linked me to Episode 3 of CTU and told me that I absolutely positively had to see this. I instead watched episode 1, told him it was gutter trash, and refused to look at another episode and attacked him for thinking this was good. After about an hour of fighting and black mailing, he somehow got me to watch the next two episodes. When I finally got to the fight with Gato in Episode 3, I finally was laughing quite a bit.

Fast forward to nearing the end of 2005, we have Cryo suddenly announcing to everyone that he is no longer interested in releasing CTU as a flash series anymore and was considering just writing the rest of it as scripts. I rushed in and told me that he should not release the script and instead let me animate it for him, as I greatly loathed watching things just abort like that. Honestly, I was actually somewhat dumbfounded at first that he agreed. After all, the only thing I had to show for myself at the time was basically Marathon and a collection of still images.

As I started to look at Cryo's half completed episode 11, I quickly began to realize I would have to throw it out the window and start over from scratch. If the admins here wanted to make an fla specifically for the purposes of giving to noobs as an instructional lesson on everything you should never do while making a flash video, this would probably have been what they might have made. The bullet list of sins against technology in the single file are far too long to list here, so I will just list one that truly made my brain explode.

Cryo was vectorizing all of the sprites he used, of which there is nothing inherently wrong with, but he wasn't encapsulating any of his vectorized sprites in graphic symbols. He would get a new vectorized copy of the sprite each and every time he needed one and leave it sitting naked and unsymbolized on the timeline (pretty much the only time he made symbols were for walking animations, and even then all the sprites in the movie symbol were the same way). I will never forget his answer when I asked him why he did this: "I didn't want to risk cluttering up the library."

What the, I don't even...

So anyways, after tossing out his half finish Episode 11, I made a completely fresh one, complete with a Benny Hill sequence that wasn't originally in the script: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/278283 (this was my first experience ever in sprite animating, and I made a number of mistakes I would work on rectifying in later episodes)

FUN FACT: Cryo told me I shouldn't make the credit sequence in that episode because it would be too hard to do and wouldn't be worth the effort.

So Chrono Trigger Unglued was off the death hook, but Cryo and I were off to a rather dangerously rocky start. A little bit later, as I was working on Episode 12, I went to get his approval for something in the script I had modified and he told me that I had to remember that from now on I was in charge and he trusted my judgement. Shortly after that, he dissapeared for many years to the point where we all seriouslty thought he was dead. He wasn't, but we really all did think he was.

These days Chrono Trigger Unglued is currently up to Episode 22, and Cryo's input has been given on and off every other blue-moon at best. I did not create Chrono Trigger Unglued, but I guess you could say that I am it's adoptive father (especially since Cryo formally resigned completely last year) and the person currently planning its future. For the record, Cryo and I actually don't hate each other... but sometimes we do frustrate the heck out of each other.

I will probably make a more formal post about Chrono Trigger Unglued, and it's official website, soon in the appropriate forum section.

I wouldn't reccomend it too terribly much. Unless you can find a better class than the one I took, many people here already knows what that guy had to teach and then some. On the other hand, if you're looking for an easy credit, then - yeah - go for it.

Translation: Try and interview the professor before you put money down for the class.
